Bontang City History
In the course of history, Bontang which previously only a village located in the watershed, then experienced a change in status, so it became a city. It is the demands of the region's diverse and growing.
At first, as a settlement area, Bontang has a very simple governance. Initially only led by an elder, holds Officials under the auspices of the Sultan of Kutai in Tenggarong. Officials Bontang The names are: Grandma H Tondeng, Muhammad Arsyad which later was given the title by the Sultan of Kutai as Kapitan, Kideng, and Haji Amir aka Baida Bedang

Bontang continued to evolve so that in 1952 determined to become a village led by Indigenous Elders. At that time the leadership was divided in two: matters relating to administration handled by the head of the village, while those concerning customs governed by Indigenous Elders
Long before he became the Administrative City, since 1920, Bontang Village set to become the capital district that was then called Onder District Bontang van, which was ruled by an assistant district officer who holds Kiyai.
The Kyai who had ruled in Bontang and still lingering in the memory of most residents is: Kiyai Anang Kempeng, Kyai Hasan, Kiyai Raden Aji, Anang Kiyai Acil, Kiyai Menong, Kiyai Yemen, and Kyai Saleh.
Before becoming a city, state Bontang increase to the district, under the leadership of an assistant district officer in the Government of Sultan Aji Muhammad Parikshit, the Sultan of Kutai XIX (1921-1960), once established Law No. 27 Year 1959 on the establishment of the Regional Level II in East Kalimantan with remove the status of the Autonomous Government.
On January 21, 1960, under Law No. 27 of 1959, the Special Session of Parliament Special Kutai, Kutai Sultanate abolished and instead formed Tk II Kutai District which covers 30 districts. One of the township is located in Bontang Bontang New, includes several villages, the Village Bontang, Santan Ulu, Santan Ilir, Santan Central, North Cape, Sepaso, Tabayan Damp, Edge Langsat, and Keraitan. Bontang then experienced rapid growth. It's starting to look at 1975, which caused maketh Bontang as industrial areas. In 1974 PT Badak stand which manages the natural gas industry. Three years later, 1977, following the establishment of PT Kaltim Fertilizer managing fertilizer and ammonia industries.
With progress so rapidly because of the construction of infrastructure facilities and national, even international, regional government consider increasing the Bontang status of the City Administrative District is through Government Regulation No. 20 of 1989. Thus was formed the working area of Regent Regional Assistant Level II Kutai District Coastal Region Bontang East Kalimantan Governor finally proposed to be upgraded to the City Administrative (Kotif).
In 1989, with the PP. District 22 Year 1988 approved the City Administrative Bontang and inaugurated in 1990 with the charge of District of North Bontang (consisting of New Bontang, Bontang Kuala, Carambola, Lok Master) and South (Sekambing, Berbas Coast, Central Berbas, Satimpo, and the Cape Sea). On October 12, 1999, Kotif later changed to the Autonomous Cities, based on Law No. 47 of 1999.
In order to carry out the task of governance when it appointed Drs. Ishak Karim as the first Mayor Kotif Bontang. As an outgrowth of the Regional Level II Kutai District, then through Act No. 47 of 1999 on the establishment of the City of Bontang. As an executor appointed Drs. Fachmurniddin tasks that perform the task of governance and execution of definitive mayoral election preparations. Previously also been formed House of Representatives (DPRD) Bontang City by the Mayor through the determination of candidates submitted by each party based on the number of seats in the 1999 elections. After council members met the requirements, then the set and appointed the members of the council consisting of 25 people with head H. Rusdin Abdau.
Bontang first mayor of the election board members are Dr. Andi Sofyan Hasdam H, Sp,.S. of the Golkar Party and the H. Adam Malik as Vice Mayor from PPP. They were sworn in and taken an oath of office on March 1, 2000
